Day 2
Picacho Peak, Arizona – Monahan Hills State Park, Texas
620 miles logged
We are all getting a little road worn and home sick. The miles today seemed to be never ending and everyone’s mood is a little sour. We landed at the Monahan Hills State Park outside of El Paso, Texas just before sunset. It is literally the largest sand dune I have ever seen stuck out in the middle of nowhere Texas. Just sand for as far as the eyes can see.
We lucked into finding a rogue saucer near our campsite so we sent the girls out to explore the “sledding” hills while we set up camp. The sun was setting and coloring the sky with pale pinks and purples juxtaposed to the white sand hills for a beautiful evening sky. Brad and I jogged through the sand to meet the girls, which was not an easy feat. We all got in a little sledding before we lost daylight.
Our dinner luck hasn’t been less than lucky. While the chicken hit the asphalt back in Arizona, our grill and several other essentials met a similar fate taking a sand bath at the dunes. To the best of his effort, Brad cleaned the grill; however, our carne asada turned into sandy asada and was mostly inedible. Thank god for asphalt chicken.
We all crashed early in halfway decent moods. I was shocked to hear we had two more nights before we arrive at home. Hopefully tomorrow is a better day for all.
