How much money and time have you spent on your beauty routine? Personally, I’m afraid to pull out the calculator to add up all the cash and oh so many hours. I LOVE pampering myself with my beauty routine and take great pleasure in what I call the “spiritual experience” of showering and layering on my facial and body care products.
I’m put off by skincare gimmicks and trends and instead spend a lot of time researching products and procedures that have scientific data backing their efficacy and results. Of ALL the lotions and potions I’ve tried over the years, there is one gold standard product that has proven anti-aging benefits for all skin types. This product, despite all the science backing it, has until recently been one of my least favorite to use and one that many people skip using altogether. What is this magic product? Sunscreen!
Sunscreens of the past have been cosmetically inelegant often leaving your face with either a less than desirable white cast or blinding reflective shine. As skincare has evolved so have sunscreens and todays varieties are “chefs kiss” and can be incorporated into your routine in a variety of ways. Do you use a moisturizer in the morning? Try using one that contains SPF. Are you a makeup wearer? There are so many parts of your routine that have SPF varieties: primer, concealer, foundation, lipstick, etc). You can actually find an almost full face of makeup products that contain SPF. Looking for a great way to touch up your face SPF during the day or cut shine on your face? Try a mineral powder with SPF built into a makeup brush applicator. Want to support a minority owned brand and protect your skin? Try products from companies like “Black Girl Sunscreen.” I’m neither black, nor a girl and their “Make it Matte SPF 45” is one of my favorite face sunscreens (it’s great at cutting shine and doesn’t contain Oxybenzone which can sting your eyes).
Still not convinced? How about preventing the loss of collagen and elastin in your skin helping to keep it plump and supple while at the same time protecting you from skin cancer. Yes please! And while you’re at it, why not pick up an extra bottle to donate to a women’s shelter. That’s what I consider a big win all around!
