Starting a Yoga Practice — From Home!
Many of us have begun the shift from group yoga classes to online videos for yoga from home. I went from teaching several yoga classes a day, with several clients, to filming workouts in my studio. However, doing yoga from the privacy of your own space can be extremely beneficial.
While this is not to say that classes have no benefit to them, because they are certainly important and can help with learning fundamental poses and getting help in perfecting your alignment, the true benefits of yoga really begin when you take your practice home.
When you take yoga home with you, you have your own space to explore poses and listen to your body. You are better able to focus on how your body feels without trying to follow along with an instructor with 10 other people in the room. Having the space to take your practice at your own pace is perfect for tuning in to what your body is communicating to you.

When starting an at home practice, you will need some of your own equipment. Check out this list of Manduka products that I use throughout my videos. The equipment they sell is such high quality and well worth the investment if you are serious about starting your practice.
This mat is damn near indestructible. It is also perfect padding for supporting and protecting your joints throughout your practice. Check out this video that explains how to break in your PRO yoga mat.
This mat is fairly similar to the PRO, just a little thinner. Still a great quality mat that supports and protects joints.
Having a towel is by no means a necessity but it can be very useful for soaking up sweat from power flows or giving some extra shoulder support during savasana.
Recycled Plastic Block – 4 x 6 x 9
Blocks are very helpful in a yoga practice; it can bring the ground closer to you as you build up flexibility in certain poses. They can also provide deepened stretches.
Straps are another great tool for increasing the intensity of stretches and providing extra support.
